This painting explores the idea of “elsewhere” not as a distant place, but as a psychological state. Through layered collage, fractured forms, and shifting planes of colour, it evokes the experience of motionless travel, the quiet drift of the mind beyond the limits of the immediate world.
The space it creates feels both vast and intimate. There is a sense of immensity, yet it is held within the frame, suggesting that expansiveness can exist inside shelter and stillness. The composition does not describe a landscape; it invites reverie. Shapes overlap and open, forming thresholds rather than boundaries and allowing the viewer to enter a suspended realm between memory, imagination, and presence.
Here, “elsewhere” becomes a form of balance, a necessary escape from the fixed certainty of the here and now. The painting offers a moment of contained infinity, where distance creates intimacy and the act of looking becomes a quiet journey inward.
This painting has been created on a framed wooden cradle board. It is a mixed media piece comprising of Acrylic Paint, Graphite, Oil Pastel, Ink, Coloured Pencil and Collage (including a mix of vintage paper and paper hand made by the artist). The painting is 31cm by 31cm, has been sealed with three layers of satin varnish to protect the work and comes ready to hang.
'Floating' has over 10 layers of paint and collage contained within it. Building it up layer by layer creates depth, texture and history. The lumps and bumps on the surface make it almost tactile and the interplay of shape next to line, collage next to paint and colour next to monocrome creates interest and drama within the piece.
