This painting was created as a private commission. Each layer is built from fragments of the client’s life - stories shared, memories uncovered, moments both hidden and celebrated. The process begins with conversation: a chance for the client to tell their story, which I then translate into paint, collage, and mark-making. Childhood recollections, family threads, present-day experiences...all are woven into the foundations and built up through many layers.
My commissions are not portraits in the traditional sense; they are layered spaces where stories take shape. Every mark carries meaning. The early layers hold what is private and unseen, while the surface reveals what has grown through and wishes to be visible. The result is a work that belongs deeply to its owner, but also invites new readings whenever it is encountered.
Though this piece has found its home, I continue to take on a small number of commissions each year. Each one is a collaboration, a conversation, and a painting that becomes both a personal history and a shared space of discovery.
This was created on a framed wooden cradle board. It is a mixed media piece comprising of Acrylic Paint, Graphite, Oil Pastel, Ink, Coloured Pencil and Collage (including a mix of vintage paper and paper hand made by the artist). The painting is 30cm by 30cm by 2.5cm, has been sealed with three layers of matt varnish to protect the work.
