In this painting I explore the connection between ancient architecture and the subconscious mind, with the concept of a fortress—both physical and psychological—emerging as a central theme. The black-and-white palette goes beyond mere aesthetic choice; it serves as a metaphor for dualities—light and dark, presence and absence, the known and the unknown. These contrasts evoke forgotten realms, where labyrinthine corridors once held the secrets of lost civilizations, now fading into memory.
This work functions as both a puzzle and a map, with the problem and the solution coexisting within the same space. It suggests that the answers to life's most profound questions are often buried beneath the surface. The textured layers symbolize the lasting impressions of our dreams, memories, and fears—constantly shifting yet rooted in the past. It’s a realm where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur, creating a dynamic space in which both are in a state of constant evolution.
This painting has been created on a wooden cradle board. It is a mixed media piece comprising of Acrylic Paint, Graphite, Oil Pastel, Ink, Coloured Pencil and Collage (including a mix of vintage paper and paper hand made by the artist). The painting is 76cm by 76cm by 2.5cm, has been sealed with three layers of satin varnish to protect the work and comes ready to hang.
'Here There Are Traces Of Labyrinthine Dreams' has over 30 layers of paint and collage contained within it. Building it up layer by layer creates depth, texture and history. The lumps and bumps on the surface make it almost tactile and the interplay of shape next to line, collage next to paint creates interest and drama within the piece.
I have 5 framed limited edition prints available. These prints have been created on aluminium using a special layering process. The coloured inks are applied with unique textures for each layer, which means each print carries a hint of the original texture from the artwork itself! For those who want a piece of the magic, the framed limited edition prints are available for £250. Please select the Ltd Edition Print Option to make a purchase.
